Last week we had the chance to explore Phuket off the beaten path. We have been to Phuket before, but the last time we visited was a disaster. Hear me out… It was raining 3 days in a row, with a storm and floods as a great conclusion to our trip. Linda had a broken leg and our hotel was flooded, so Kris had to go out in knee deep water to get some food, as we could not really leave the house. Enough with the bad stuff, though! This time we were lucky and had the best weather for all 3 days in Phuket so we were finally able to explore this popular tourist island.
Thailand has so much to offer, starting with golden temples, mouth-watering street foods and rounding it all up with beautiful landscapes and rich culture. Phuket is a known tourist destination, but we, as always, tried to get off the beaten path and explore it a little bit more in depth.

Explore Phuket Off the Beaten Path
Chase the Sunsets in Phuket
We chased the sunset and ended up having a group of young Monks around us. The orange robes and the low sun provided the perfect ambiance. It would not be possible to capture these kinds of moments if we would not have gone exploring Phuket off the beaten path. And even with a bunch of tourists around, it felt like a very special moment at the Big Buddha in Phuket.
Visit Less Touristy Beaches Around Phuket
Kris made some friends at the beach. There was this Labrador who seemed to be looking for something in the water for hours. We got worried, as he looked so desperate. We thought that his owner has left in the sea and never came back. Even the people around us got worried. In the end, it turned out the pup was just hunting the fish and cooling down in the fresh water. Head out to Ao Sane Beach for a change of scenery.
Visit Elephant Sanctuary and DO NOT RIDE THE ELEPHANTS
We saw so many baby elephants chained down and used as tourist amusement. We made a short video about how terrible is animal exploitation for tourism and how wrong it is. You can see the video on our Youtube Channel. It was heartbreaking. We encourage you to visit Elephant Sanctuaries and learn how they are trying to rehabilitate and save the endangered giants. Feed the elefants with bananas and go for a walk with them. Wash the elephants but never support such animal exploitation as commonly seen in Phuket.
Visit Viewpoints in Phuket and Wander Off the Path
We visited several viewpoints in the 37 t. C heat, but it was well worth it. The crystal clear water and the boats passing by bring such peace to the soul. In a hot day like this, it’s even more difficult to go and explore Phuket off the beaten path than in any other day – just because it’s freaking hot outside. Carry plenty of water with you and a scarf to protect the head from the sun.
Hopefully, you enjoyed our little photo story of a beautiful day we had and learned how to explore Phuket off the beaten path. This short blog post was just an insight into what you can do in a day if you rent a scooter and just wander off! We have created several more extensive Phuket guides and videos as well!
And here is the promised video guide about exploring Phuket off the beaten path:
